Understanding baby size
The length of a child is measured from the top of their head to the bottom of one of their heels. This is similar to their height, but height is measured to stand, while length is measured while your baby is lying.
The average length at birth of a full-term baby is 19 to 20 inches (about 50 cm). But most newborns range between 18 and 22 inches (45.7 to 60 cm).

How will your child grow in the first year?
On average, children grow 0.5 to 1 inch (1.5 to 2.5 cm) every month from birth to 6 months. From 6 to 12 months, babies grow an average of 3/8 inch (1 cm) each month.
Your doctor will measure and weigh your child at regular checkups and mark their progress on a standard development chart.
Your baby may develop more during certain periods. For example, development in infants is known through:

Can you guess how tall your child will be as an adult?
It is difficult to predict how tall your child will later be based on their length as a child. Once your baby grows a bit, you may be able to estimate their adult height by doubling the height of a boy at the age of 2 or doubling the height of a girl at 18 months.
